Document Version Compare

Full instructions and common questions

Document Version Compare

Compare two text-based PDFs, TXT or Markdown versions and list added or removed text with page references. Optionally ignore repeated whitespace and export a CSV change list to review document edits.

How to use

  1. Choose an old and a new text-based PDF, TXT or Markdown file. Recognize scanned PDFs before comparison.
  2. Choose whether to ignore repeated whitespace and compare versions. PDFs use their text layers, without image or layout comparison.
  3. Review added and removed text and its old or new page reference. A replacement may appear as one removal and one addition.
  4. Download the CSV change list and check each item against the original documents and surrounding context.

Try an example

Create an old TXT saying “Delivery: Friday” and a new one saying “Delivery: Monday”. Comparison should list the old text as removed and the new text as added, with TXT page reference 1.

Limits and privacy

One file per side, up to 30 MB, and up to 200 pages per PDF. Combined text is limited to 20 million characters; excessive differences or timeouts require smaller sections. It does not recognize scans or compare layout, seals or images. PDF text extraction order can affect results.

Common questions

Why can visually identical PDFs show text differences?

Their text-layer order, segmentation and whitespace can differ. Try ignoring repeated whitespace and check the originals.

Does it assess the legal effect of contract revisions?

No. It lists text changes. Their business or legal significance requires contextual review by the appropriate professional.
