The practical answer
Finalize the page order, then select PDF watermark & numbers in PDF tools. The current entry draws the same English text, numbers or common symbols on all pages and can add file-page numbers starting at 1. It does not erase content, restrict copying or encrypt the document.
A visible mark is not a confidentiality mechanism
Open PDF tools and select PDF watermark & numbers. The operation draws content onto pages; the pdf-lib drawText reference describes that interface. Putting text over existing content does not establish that the underlying content has been removed.
If a file contains information that must not be shared, remove it from the source or use a dedicated redaction process whose result can be verified. A CONFIDENTIAL label can still accompany a disclosure; it does not set access permissions.
Start with a three-page review specimen
Our original specimen has a portrait explanation page, a landscape table and a portrait appendix. Each contains recognizable body text and a footer test line, without real personal data. Keep the unmodified original and name the working copy review-v1.
Use DRAFT-REVIEW and enable page numbers. Current styling positions the diagonal label from each page’s dimensions. It offers no per-page text, position or starting-number setting. Existing footers may sit close to the new page number, so inspect every page.
| File page | Layout | New number | Inspect |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Portrait explanation | 1 / 3 | Readable heading and paragraphs |
| 2 | Landscape table | 2 / 3 | Readable column labels and values |
| 3 | Portrait appendix | 3 / 3 | Distinct original footer and new number |
Finish restructuring before the final marking pass
Complete deletion, extraction or merging before numbering. Subsequent page moves can leave stale visible numbers on the page. Read file order versus printed page labels before referring to PDF page 2 as book page 2.
The current entry processes one PDF and accepts printable ASCII watermark characters. Chinese text produces a font limitation message; that error is not evidence of a Chinese watermark export. Use an editor with suitable fonts when needed.
- Retain the original and import a copy with the final page order.
- Select PDF watermark & numbers, enter DRAFT-REVIEW and choose whether to include numbers.
- Process and download watermarked.pdf, then give the copy a useful version and purpose name.
- Reopen the download and compare each page’s text, orientation, watermark and number with the original.
Preserve reading when the placement fails
Long labels can extend beyond page edges, and portrait and landscape pages will not look identical. Shortening the text may help; otherwise return to the source or an editor with adjustable placement. Low opacity does not guarantee readable material underneath.
Existing printed numbers and watermarks are not detected and replaced automatically. Two numbering systems may remain. For a smaller review scope, follow extract pages and inspect the sharing file before marking the remaining copy.
Avoid an ambiguous page reference
Pages printed 12, 13 and 14 also receive 1 / 3, 2 / 3 and 3 / 3, while the handoff says only “see page 2.”
Specify “file page 2, printed page 13,” or omit unnecessary extra numbering.
Accept the entire document, not just its opening page
The result should retain three pages, their orientation, body sequence and readable tables. If the recipient depends on digital signatures, forms or a specific archival standard, resaving a PDF may affect validation or compatibility; check separately in the relevant software. This article does not promise those features remain valid.
Processing runs locally in the browser. Large, damaged or restricted documents may fail to load. Modify only files you are entitled to change, and request a suitable editable source when necessary.
Review-copy acceptance
- All three pages open with the expected count, order and orientation.
- English labels are complete, and tables and footers remain readable.
- The meaning of file numbering versus original printed numbering is explicit.
- The handoff makes no encryption, redaction or copy-protection claim.
Review a cover-and-body copy one page at a time
Use all four pages of mapping-four.pdf. Add DRAFT-REVIEW and file-position numbers to a review copy; this does not alter access permissions or the source document’s status.
- Finalize page order, then enter DRAFT-REVIEW in PDF watermark & numbers and enable numbering.
- Process and save a separate mapping-review-v1.pdf, retaining the unmarked source.
- Inspect COVER, CONTENTS, BODY-1 and BODY-2 in turn. Look for diagonal-mark and footer collisions with original text.
Reference result and recovery decision
Require four pages, each with DRAFT-REVIEW and sequential 1 / 4 through 4 / 4. Printed body labels 1 and 2 remain. Record mark presence and original readability as two separate acceptance conditions.
Blank watermark text or checking only the opening page can conceal an incomplete review. Recheck settings for a missing mark. If diagonal placement obstructs real tables, use another placement-capable route; this entry does not offer free dragging.
The review a cover-and-body copy one page at a time exercise is an authored teaching case. Retain source, output and review decisions separately; the shared ZIP is preparation material, not a verified user outcome.
Common questions
Can it mark page 2 only?
The current entry applies the same mark to every page and has no per-page selector. Use another appropriate editing workflow for selective or varying labels.
Can I add only page numbers?
Yes. Leave the watermark text blank and retain the page-number option. Inspect the footer placement after downloading.
Can numbering begin at 10?
This entry generates labels such as 1 / total from file order and has no custom starting number. Renaming the file does not change the visible numbering.
