The practical answer
The PDF-to-Word mode in the Word document tool extracts available text page by page into DOCX. It does not promise the original layout, images or native tables. Check columns and mixed scanned pages against the source; an entirely image-only PDF needs an OCR route first.
Choose editable wording or faithful page appearance
For revising a course description, a page-based text draft can reduce retyping. For delivering an identical designed document, text extraction is an insufficient standard. A .docx filename establishes the output format, not complete reconstruction of the original page.
The official PDF.js examples distinguish document processing and page rendering. This tool reads positioned text items. It does not put a screenshot of each PDF page into Word, and this conversion route does not run an OCR engine. Understanding that route helps explain why a missing illustration can reflect a feature boundary rather than a broken download.
| Goal | Current route supplies | Additional work |
|---|---|---|
| Continue editing prose | Page-based text paragraphs | Reading order and paragraph repair |
| Preserve charts and columns | No layout-recovery guarantee | Reinsert images, rebuild layout or use another converter |
| Recover scanned wording | No direct image-only extraction | OCR and recognition review |
Try representative pages before committing to a workflow
- Keep the original PDF. Identify an ordinary text page, a two-column page and a page containing an illustration or scan. Make a representative copy if useful.
- Open the Word document tool, select PDF to Word, choose the PDF and process it. This mode accepts one PDF at a time.
- Open the downloaded DOCX beside the original. The output adds a page-number heading localized to the active interface for each source page and page-break settings for later pages. These are generated labels, not original chapter titles.
- Review the representative pages, then inspect the complete document. If a class of pages needs a different method, process it explicitly rather than silently dropping those pages.
Position-based lines do not establish a two-column reading path
The converter groups text items at similar vertical positions into lines, orders them horizontally and may represent larger horizontal gaps with tabs. It does not infer the semantic instruction to finish the left column before reading the right. Columns, side notes, tables and footnotes can consequently lose their intended relationships.
Consider this original layout example, not a claimed test of a real textbook. The left column contains A1 above A2; the right contains B1 above B2. A1 and B1 share a height. A position-based result may read A1, B1, A2, B2. Determine the intended order from the original page design instead of assuming horizontal sorting represents the author’s meaning.
Repair the reading path
A1 B1 A2 B2
Left column: A1 → A2 Right column: B1 → B2
Check image-only pages even when the conversion succeeds
If an entire PDF has no extractable text, the tool reports that OCR may be needed. A mixed document is easier to misread: text elsewhere can let processing succeed while a scanned page contributes only its generated heading. Neither the success message nor the number of headings proves completeness.
Use the scanned-PDF and OCR checks to inspect the text layer. Compare pictures, signatures, chart labels and complex formulas separately; the current route does not reinsert embedded pictures as Word images. If a scan contains a key conclusion, recover and proofread it before handing off the draft.
Accept an editable draft with an explicit status
Read from the first heading to the final paragraph and spot-check names, values, units and negation. A row that resembles a table is not necessarily a native Word table: this implementation creates ordinary paragraphs with tab-separated text. The relationship checks in the PDF cell-alignment guide can help decide what must be rebuilt.
Name the document’s state clearly: text draft, columns regrouped, scanned appendix awaiting OCR. That is more useful than “conversion complete.” For restricted, damaged or unsupported files, preserve the original and error information and continue with an authorized source or suitable editor. Failed extraction does not prove that the source has no content.
Review each source page
- Every page has accounted-for content, including scans hidden by an overall success message.
- Columns, side notes and footnotes follow the source reading relationships.
- Missing pictures, charts and formulas are restored or explicitly listed.
- Critical wording and values match, and tab-separated paragraphs are not presented as native tables.
Four lines in two columns: text presence is not reading order
two-column.pdf has L1: source and L2: input down the left column, R1: review and R2: output down the right. The required reading order is the entire left column before the right.
- Choose PDF to Word in the Word document tool, import the PDF and download the DOCX.
- Open it beside the source. Ignore the tool-added page heading and record the four original markers in output order.
- Compare against L1, L2, R1, R2. If horizontal rows give L1, R1, L2, R2, rebuild the order in a separate editing draft and reread.
Reference result and recovery decision
Four markers pass only a quantity check. The left-then-right semantic reading sequence must pass separately. This entry generates an editable text draft, not a reconstruction guarantee for columns, illustrations or layout.
Editable output is insufficient for layout acceptance. A structural text check is not a native Word layout review. Before delivery, open the document in the recipient’s editor and inspect the complete reading path and any missing graphics.
The four lines in two columns: text presence is not reading order exercise is an authored teaching case. Retain source, output and review decisions separately; the shared ZIP is preparation material, not a verified user outcome.
Common questions
Is a different Word page count automatically a failure?
No. Text reflow can change pagination. Account for the content of each original page instead of comparing only page totals.
Why does a page contain only the generated heading?
It may have no extractable text. A mixed PDF can succeed overall while scanned pages still need OCR and proofreading.
Does this route preserve original images?
It primarily produces text paragraphs and does not reinsert original pictures. Choose another route or rebuild the layout when images and appearance must be preserved.
