The practical answer
Merge mode in the PDF tools copies pages in sequence; it does not automatically convert US Letter to A4. Record source page counts and sizes, inspect the downloaded PDF, then check print scaling separately. If the recipient requires one paper size, re-export from the original documents where possible. Rotation does not standardize paper.
Separate size, orientation and zoom
A4 portrait and US Letter portrait pages can both read upright while having different widths and heights. A sideways scan presents a different problem: the paper may be correct, but its content or rotation is wrong. A third possibility is simply per-page zoom in the viewer. Diagnose the actual property before choosing a fix.
Choose the next check from the symptom
Different sizes
Record each page’s dimensions from a suitable PDF reader, rather than comparing screenshots.
Sideways text
Inspect page rotation and the direction of the content before rotating anything.
Changing preview scale
Fix the viewer’s zoom first so a display adjustment is not mistaken for a file change.
A successful merge can retain two paper sizes
This original example uses two disposable test PDFs with simple identifying labels. MDN’s page-size reference lists A4 as 210×297mm and Letter as 8.5×11in. In common PDF point units those are approximately 595.28×841.89 and 612×792. The rounded figures identify the paper; they do not promise printer accuracy.
Merge A4 first and Letter second. The expected result has two pages retaining their respective sizes. Correct count, order and intact content pass the merge task. They do not also pass a separate requirement to make every page A4.
| Page | Source and paper | Expected after merge |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 01-cover-a4.pdf; 210×297mm | A4 portrait; A4-COVER label intact |
| 2 | 02-appendix-letter.pdf; 8.5×11in | Letter portrait; LETTER-APPENDIX label intact |
Merge against a short manifest
- Keep the originals. Record each file’s page count, paper size, orientation and a recognizable header or footer. Re-export damaged or inaccessible encrypted files from a legitimate readable source.
- Open PDF Merge and select the files in your planned order. Compare the input list with the manifest; filenames alone are not proof of the downloaded order.
- Generate and download merged.pdf. Reopen it and confirm that the total page count equals the sum of the inputs, with the expected labels and appendix sequence.
- Inspect every page’s dimensions in a reader that exposes them. If your viewer only shows thumbnails, use another suitable inspection method rather than assuming visually similar pages are physically identical.
Printing is a separate handoff decision
A reading pack intended for screens may be perfectly usable with mixed paper sizes. A print shop, binding service or A4-only submission system may need something different. Ask whether the requirement concerns paper size, content scale or consistent margins; these can call for different changes.
KitNelo’s merge interface has no paper-normalization or reflow setting. The PDFPage reference describes page width and height through the MediaBox, supporting a separate dimensions check. For file organization, use the PDF merging and page-order guide; assembling the files does not certify their layout.
Two decisions for the same mixed-size file
Rotate every page because the appendix looks shorter, or print at actual size without checking.
Confirm the target paper first. For all-A4 delivery, set A4 in the original documents and re-export. If printing is the only option, inspect scaling, margins and identifying labels page by page.
Leave an inspectable result
If only some pages are sideways and your rotation tool changes all pages, consult the mixed-orientation rotation check before fixing one page at the expense of the others. Keep an original version of forms, signatures and important records. Confirm business requirements before repeatedly printing the only copy into a new PDF.
Before sending the file
- Count and order match the manifest; identifying headers and footers remain intact.
- Mixed paper is explicitly acceptable, or the required layout was re-exported from the source.
- Orientation, print scaling and edge content have been checked for every page.
- The download reopens, and the recipient knows whether A4 and Letter remain mixed.
A4 and Letter: equal viewer width is not equal paper size
mixed-sizes.pdf has an A4 page, approximately 595.28×841.89 pt, and a Letter page, 612×792 pt. Place main-two.pdf before it for a four-page merge.
- Record source counts and dimensions; merge main-two.pdf followed by mixed-sizes.pdf.
- Download merged.pdf and check A1, A2, A4, LETTER in that order.
- Inspect dimensions of pages 3 and 4 in a reader that exposes individual page sizes. Fit-to-width display is insufficient evidence.
Reference result and recovery decision
Require 2+2=4 pages. The first three are approximately A4 and the fourth remains Letter. This task permits mixed dimensions; the result is neither a merge failure nor a conversion of every page to A4.
If all-A4 delivery is mandatory, reject this output. Re-layout or re-export using explicit scale and margin rules, then inspect text and stamps again. This exercise does not verify physical printing.
The a4 and letter: equal viewer width is not equal paper size exercise is an authored teaching case. Retain source, output and review decisions separately; the shared ZIP is preparation material, not a verified user outcome.
Common questions
Does merging automatically make every page A4?
No. This merge tool copies the source pages and offers no paper-standardization or reflow option. Re-export the originals or use suitable layout software if all-A4 output is required.
Can rotating Letter by 90 degrees make it A4?
No. Rotation changes orientation, not the underlying paper standard. First distinguish sideways text from a page-size mismatch.
Is fit to page always safe for printing?
No. It can shrink text or change margins and form scale. Inspect each preview and follow the recipient’s requirements when physical dimensions or signed forms matter.
