The practical answer
A horizontal flip swaps the entire picture’s left and right sides, including the shapes of letters. A 90-degree rotation turns the picture and swaps the width and height of a non-square canvas. Keep the original, export the operations separately, and inspect both text and asymmetric details.
Choose the operation from the actual problem
The MDN canvas scaling reference explains flipping with negative scale values and includes horizontally mirrored text. A transformation acts on pixels; it does not recognize a brand name and preserve its readability. This guide concerns image orientation rather than correcting the words in an image.
If a picture lies sideways but its lettering is in the correct order, try rotation first. Consider horizontal flipping when the subject must face the opposite direction and mirroring the whole scene is acceptable. Check directional diagrams and identification material carefully before editing.
| Operation | Position change | Text and dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal flip | Left and right exchange | Letters mirror; width and height do not swap |
| Vertical flip | Top and bottom exchange | The entire scene flips vertically; dimensions do not swap |
| 90° rotation | The scene turns a quarter turn | Text rotates; width and height exchange |
Prepare an image that reveals a wrong result
Make a copy of the original. For practice, use a red block marked L on the left, a blue block marked R on the right, and a short readable label. Our original exercise uses a 320×180 canvas; these numbers describe the exercise, rather than a platform requirement. On a real product photo, identify existing asymmetric features instead of adding marks.
Upload the copy through the conversion entry in the image workbench. Keep its dimensions, disable cropping and additional effects, and choose PNG for this orientation check. If your destination also limits dimensions, follow the pixel size and aspect ratio guide afterwards. Separating those decisions makes a changed result easier to diagnose.
First export: horizontal flip only
Expand the advanced processing and watermark controls. Leave rotation at 0° and toggle horizontal flip once. Click “Apply settings to all images,” wait for the new result, and download it. This control is a toggle: clicking it twice may undo the change, so a remembered click is insufficient evidence.
Open the downloaded file locally. The red L block should now be on the right and the blue R block on the left, with their letter shapes mirrored too. The canvas should remain 320×180. An output of 180×320 indicates that rotation was also applied.
Look beyond a centered face
Red L on the left | readable label | blue R on the right
Original blue block on the left | mirrored label | original red block on the right
Second export: return to the original and rotate 90°
Reload the original copy, confirm both flips are off, and choose 90° starting from 0°. Apply the settings to all images, wait for the regenerated result, and download it under another name. Uploading the already mirrored download would test a combined transformation, which answers a different question. Evaluate one operation before combining settings.
The expected dimensions are now 180×320. The lettering turns with the scene; following its new orientation should reveal the same letter order rather than mirrored shapes. Use the downloaded dimensions and actual pixels as the final evidence, even when the preview looks right.
Accept each file independently
- Keep the original 320×180 copy with an identifiable filename.
- The mirrored file remains 320×180 and exchanges asymmetric sides.
- The rotated file is 180×320, with rotated rather than mirrored text.
- Reopen each real download and make sure it belongs to the current run.
Apply the checks to the intended destination
For packaging, inspect brand text, scales and connector positions. For selfies, establish whether the capture preview was already mirrored. For instructional screenshots, verify that button positions still match the actual software. A pleasing composition does not establish correct directional information, and this workflow does not certify marketplace compliance.
Orientation editing also does not replace a privacy review. Consult the photo metadata removal workflow before sharing location-sensitive photographs. For animated or multi-page inputs, confirm which frame or page the selected entry processes before extending a single-image conclusion to the entire file.
Recover from a failed check
Backwards lettering
Return to the original and turn off horizontal flip. Reconsider whether rotation alone answers the problem.
Correct direction, missing edges
Check cropping and fixed-ratio settings, restore the complete canvas, then export again.
Preview and download disagree
Check the output timestamp and current settings. Process again and inspect the new file rather than an older download.
Common questions
Can horizontal flipping keep the text readable?
A whole-image mirror also mirrors letters. Return to the original and select the appropriate operation, or separately edit an authorized text layer if the task allows it.
Will rotating 90 degrees preserve the file size?
Not necessarily. Swapping dimensions and preserving encoded byte size are separate matters. Re-encoding can change file size even when the pixel count stays the same.
Should I repeatedly edit the previous download?
Keep an original copy and begin each comparison from it. Separate output files expose combined operations and avoid accumulating losses from repeated lossy encoding.
