M6 iMac announced: choosing a configuration around your desk

Apple announced the M6 iMac on October 27, 2026. If you are replacing a desktop, start with the configuration you will actually order, the connections your desk needs and your local ordering schedule. A headline’s maximum capability is not the specification of every model.

What changed

List peripherals before selecting a configuration. Apple names10-core CPU/10-core GPU and 12-core CPU/12-core GPU tiers. Four Thunderbolt 4 ports, the 2.5Gb Ethernet option and the nano-texture option have configuration conditions. The US announcement gives October 28 preorders; mainland China gives October 29. Both identify November 6 as the start of availability.

Keep configuration conditions beside the feature

Apple’s US release lists starting prices of$1499 and$1699 for the two tiers. Those are US announced starting prices, not worldwide tax-inclusive totals. This article does not combine education discounts, accessories, exchange rates and shipping into a claimed global minimum.

The footnotes associate all four USB-C ports supporting Thunderbolt 4, the 2.5Gb Ethernet option and the nano-texture option with the 12-core CPU/12-core GPU model. An available option is not necessarily included in the configuration in your basket.

A connection plan reveals what your desk actually needs

Consider an authored purchasing example: a designer wants an external SSD, wired networking and one external monitor. Record each device’s actual connector, power needs, adapter requirements and manufacturer-supported conditions. Three devices do not necessarily consume three identical ports, and dock suitability is not determined by socket count alone.

If the SSD and monitor share a dock, check bandwidth, power and display support together. We have not tested any dock with the new iMac. This worksheet is not a compatibility list and does not establish that an old adapter can deliver the full advertised display capabilities.

External SSD

Record protocol, cable and any independent power requirement.

Wired network

Check the selected networking option or the port used by an adapter.

External display

Specify resolution, refresh rate and connection route; validate the whole chain.

Use the announcement for the market where you order

Apple’s mainland-China announcement says ordering begins October 29; the US announcement says October 28. Do not convert one market’s calendar date into an asserted opening time for another market. These releases do not provide one universal minute-by-minute preorder time. Check the actual store for inventory and delivery.

As with the new iPad mini configuration and software checks, distinguish announcement, preorder, availability and the release of a particular software feature. Hardware preorders do not establish simultaneous availability of every AI feature in every region.

Define an upgrade by the task it should improve

Editorial advice: identify where the old computer slows your work, such as organizing large photos, exporting video or connecting accessories. Then distinguish compute, memory, storage, connections and software compatibility. A chip name cannot answer all five, and a vendor benchmark is not a promise about total workflow time.

If your current machine completes the task, the announcement alone is not evidence that replacement is necessary. If you need a new one, retain a configuration screenshot, regional quotation, warranty and accessory list before ordering. The certified-refurbished device and warranty checks apply the same principle: identify the actual product and terms.

This article explains announcements and purchasing checks. It contains no new-device benchmark, battery test or inventory monitoring. Treat chip capability, software conditions, order access and delivery as separate evidence items.

Keep a purchasing note another person can verify

  • Name the market and currency rather than presenting US prices as local quotes.
  • Retain the exact chip tier and port configuration.
  • Separate available options from selected options.
  • Check each peripheral’s full connection route.
  • Confirm availability, tax, warranty and delivery on the actual order.
