Quick answer
Read the official notes, confirm the version actually installed and check your regular tasks. The checklist below is editorial advice. We have not benchmarked Firefox 157 or tested its compatibility with KitNelo, and cannot infer a speed improvement on your device.
Confirmed changes and the two different dates
The stable release and its official notes are dated September 29; this article is published October 2. Mozilla lists a refreshed interface, built-in themes and compact mode, AV1 hardware decoding for WebRTC calls on supported devices, and a fix for incorrectly oriented call video from phones and tablets. See the original notes for scope and conditions.
These changes do not establish matching features on another website. A call-video orientation fix does not mean uploaded photographs will be corrected automatically. Hardware decoding availability also depends on the device.
Choose three tasks you actually use
Our suggestion is to choose one reading task, one download and one call, and write a completion criterion for each. Reading might mean opening a course and locating its materials. A download might mean saving and reopening a public PDF. A call might require the expected camera orientation, microphone input and audible output. Specific criteria reveal the stage that needs attention.
Save unfinished work and record your current browser version and operating system. Use the browser’s normal update process; follow administrator procedures on managed devices. A news headline is not a reason to install a file from an unfamiliar download site.
Inspect the same workflow after updating
- 1Confirm the version actually installed. If the update is not available to your device yet, record that state rather than treating the announcement date as proof of installation.
- 2Open a familiar page at your regular zoom level. Check menus, scrolling and input before returning to a deadline-sensitive task.
- 3Use a public, non-sensitive test file and complete preview, download and reopen. Check the directory, filename and content: a download button alone does not prove a usable file was saved.
- 4If you rely on meetings, test your actual meeting service, camera orientation, input and output devices, and permissions. Observe the result rather than assuming an announced fix resolves your particular problem.
Separate page, file and browser problems
When a PDF will not open, first ask whether the source page is inaccessible, the download is incomplete or a saved file cannot be read. Repeatedly pressing the same button for different failures does not locate the cause. Comparing the same public material in another browser can reveal an environment difference; it cannot establish that one browser is universally better.
For a useful report, record the version, system, failing step and whether the behavior repeats. Provide a non-sensitive screenshot or minimal example. Keep accounts, private documents and access tokens out of public reports. Describe an intermittent or unconfirmed issue accurately.
If downloading works but the materials are out of order, follow the PDF merge and delivery checks. For material starting as photographs, use the images-to-PDF page-order workflow before attributing missing pages to a browser release.
What still needs verification?
- This article contains no speed, battery, memory or study-performance measurements. A hardware decoding experience needs a specific device and meeting service.
- Updating does not guarantee compatibility with a particular PDF, course site or extension. For submissions, check the final file against the recipient’s requirements.
- Official notes may be revised. Return to the primary links when deciding support scope or issue status instead of circulating only the headline.
- The optional tools below assist file checks. They have no claimed partnership with Firefox or inherited browser features.
Common questions
Should I reprocess every old file after updating?
A release announcement alone does not require this. Check regular tasks and representative files first, then address a specific compatibility problem while keeping originals.
Will the AV1 change make every video faster?
That does not follow. The announcement concerns WebRTC calls and device support. We have not measured other playback or performance on your device.
How should I report a download problem?
Include the browser version, system, source, saved result and repeatable steps. Demonstrate the issue with a public test file and contact the relevant site or browser support.
