Check Claude Content Credentials without treating “not found” as “not AI”

A supplier sends an image described as processed with Claude. What can an editor verify? Begin by separating a credential attached to a file from a watermark in written text. Neither question alone establishes whether the depicted event happened, who created the underlying material or whether you have permission to publish it. A useful workflow preserves those distinctions all the way to the handoff.

The workflow at a glance

Keep the received original, select it in the official Claude file checker, and record the file version, check date and displayed result. That page checks for a Claude Content Credential in files; it does not detect text watermarks. Describe a result as found or not found for that version, rather than declaring the content true, false or definitely non-AI.

File credentials and text detection have separate scopes

As reviewed on October 18, 2026, the Claude marking help page distinguishes embedded text watermarks from file Content Credentials. It lists model and platform coverage and includes an October 17 target for some Amazon Bedrock marking coverage. That is a date in the support description, not a claim that a new model launched today or that we verified every account.

The official file checker runs in the browser and reads attached credentials. It explicitly does not check text. Text detection has a separate private-preview access scope. The workflow below is editorial advice, not an accuracy study or a claim that a public upload box can classify all writing.

Keep a received version that nobody edits

Save the original attachment in an internal source folder and create a separate editing copy. Do not begin with a screenshot, recompression, conversion or re-save and then check only that derivative. The help page notes that conversion and re-saving can remove file metadata. Visually similar versions can therefore have different credential results.

Record receipt time, the source’s explanation and the filename. If your workflow uses file hashes, the version and checksum manifest can identify the exact bytes checked. A hash identifies a file version; it does not by itself establish who produced its content.

Before running a check

  • The original attachment is retained separately from an editing copy.
  • The format and size fit the current checker’s stated limits.
  • A screenshot or compressed derivative is not mislabeled as the received original.
  • The result will be attached to a specific version and check date.

Build a record for an illustrative cover-image handoff

Imagine receiving cover-original.png and cover-web.jpg, with the supplier describing the latter as a web compression. This example has not been submitted for detection and assumes no result. Check the source version first and the derivative if relevant. Record each displayed result separately rather than collapsing them into “this picture is certified.”

If a credential is found in the original but not the web copy, retain both observations and ask about the transformation steps. If neither produces a signal, do not reverse the logic and conclude there was no AI processing. If only an unattributed screenshot exists, mark that source gap and request a reviewable original and usage explanation.

A good record states its boundary

Beyond the evidence

Nothing was found, so the cover is entirely human-made and trustworthy.

A limited observation

cover-web.jpg: no relevant credential found using the official file checker on the recorded date; original production and factual content remain separately unverified.

The second wording retains file identity, time and scope without turning a missing signal into a guarantee about the entire creation process.

Request evidence from collaborators instead of asking AI to guess

Use the following wording for an internal handoff. It requests existing evidence rather than invented sources or guesses based on visual style. If an accompanying article contains factual claims or quotations, continue with reference verification. File credentials cannot replace opening the cited source.

Copyable asset handoff request

For each asset, provide the received original filename, publication-copy filename, known creation and conversion steps, original source and permission information. If you use the Claude file checker, record the date, exact version and displayed result. When nothing is found, state only that no relevant credential was found; do not infer non-AI origin. Mark unknown steps as unknown rather than guessing from appearance.
An editorial request template, not a completed detection report.

Three outcomes lead to three different next steps

When a Claude-related credential is found, record the signal while still reviewing the source material, changes and usage terms. When it is not found, retain the scope of the check. When a format is unsupported or checking fails, record the check as incomplete and return to the source chain for information.

Do not assign blame to a student, author or supplier from an uncorroborated result. For disputed material, combine any signal with source and process evidence. We did not run a model, submit customer files or measure detection performance for this article. The useful deliverable is a file record another editor can inspect.

Common questions

Does no credential found prove the file was not AI-generated?

No. Coverage, file version and transformations can affect the signal. State that no relevant credential was found in this version.

Does a Claude credential identify Claude as the original author?

No. Claude may have edited or processed material. Underlying authorship, facts and permission need separate review.

Can I paste essay text into the file checker?

That page explicitly does not check text. Text-watermark detection has a different entry point and access scope.
